At the Learning Centre for Hamilton children are tutored using the Orton-Gillingham approach. One hour tutoring sessions are scheduled twice a week, after regular school hours, and are conducted by trained Orton-Gillingham tutors. The program consists of five levels of tutoring and generally takes two to three years to complete.
• The Orton-Gillingham approach is structured, multi-sensory, phonetic, and sequential
• Orton-Gillingham lessons are crafted to meet the individual needs of each child and are paced according to the child’s individual progress
• The Orton-Gillingham approach helps to “rewire the brain” and to establish new neuropaths to aid with decoding language
• Tutoring uses all learning pathways in the brain (visual, auditory and kinesthetic-tactile) simultaneously in order to enhance memory and learning
• Orton-Gillingham lessons begin with the easiest and most basic elements of language and progress to more difficult material
• Each step in the program is based on concepts already learned
• Concepts taught are systematically reviewed to strengthen memory
• Children experience success in every lesson, and gain confidence as well as skill
• Self-esteem improves as the child learns and success in school happens
